How to Design a Garment Rack

Research the various designs and models of garment racks available commercially and save pictures of designs which inspire you. Focus on individual details which interest you, rather than looking for the perfect finished product. This way you can piece together a unique creation from a combination of inspiration and original designs.

Sketch various designs for your garment rack on a piece of paper. During this stage, the more ideas you put on paper the better, so don't be afraid to draw and redraw. Remember that a garment rack should be about 5 feet high, with a width between 3 and 5 feet and a depth of about 2 1/2 feet. Different options include wheels, wooden material versus metal material, shape and frequency of crossbars, and additional storage for shoes, accessories, etc.

Combine different aspects from your own designs into a final product. Produce a few drafts of this final design until you have something that you believe captures the idea of what you want to achieve. Apply measurements to the various sections according to your idea. Use existing garment racks as a model for this step if you wish.

Bring your plans to a woodworker or builder to see if they can give you an estimate for construction costs. Many local woodshops can refer you to amateur woodworkers who may want to take on the project for practice and a little extra income. If you feel up to the task, you may even want to try building the garment rack yourself. This will be much easier if you are using wood as your main material rather than metal.
