Build the nightstand using 1/2-inch plywood or medium-density fiberboard, then apply a birch veneer to cover its exterior.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the size you need for your nightstand, for example, 16 inches deep, 18 inches wide and 26 1/2 inches tall.

    • 2

Measure and mark the 1/2-inch plywood for the nightstand panels. Two side panels must measure 16 inches by 26 inches. The top and bottom panels must measure 16 inches by 18 inches. The back panel must measure 18 inches by 26 inches.

    • 3

Cut the panels out of the plywood with the circular saw. Measure and cut a top piece measuring 17 inches by 24 inches.

    • 4

Measure up from the bottom of each side panel 3 inches and make a mark with the pencil. This will be the location of the bottom panel.

    • 5

Align the ends of the side panels with sides of the top panel. Drill three holes where two boards meet, using the power drill. Apply a bead of wood glue to the edges of the top panel. Secure the boards together with screws, using the power drill.

    • 6

Align the bottom panel with the pencil marks you made at the bottom of the boards. Drill three holes where the boards meet, using the power drill. Apply wood glue to the edges of the bottom panel. Secure the boards together with the screws.

    • 7

Set the back of the nightstand in place and drill four holes on each side where the boards meet, using the power drill. Apply a bead of wood glue to the sides, top and bottom of the back panel. Secure the panel to the frame with the screws.

    • 8

Apply wood glue to the top piece, then place it on the frame. Secure the top to the frame with screws.

    • 9

Cut the birch veneer and edge banding to the sizes needed to cover the surfaces and edges of the nightstand. Apply each piece of the veneer and edge banding to the nightstand, using a household iron to activate the adhesive backing. Allow the iron to heat up, then run it over the birch veneer and edge banding.

Cut off excess veneer and edge banding even with the edges of the nighstand, using a utility knife.
