Princess Canopy Directions

A gossamer canopy adds regal charm to any girl's room, but doesn't have to cost a king's ransom. By assembling it yourself with inexpensive items available at most discount stores, you not only save money but use colors and fabrics designed specifically for the style of the room. While an adult needs to do most of the assembly, even the youngest princess can participate in decorating the canopy, making the project even more special.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the fabric for your canopy. Because the canopy will be visible from top and bottom, tulle is an excellent choice. Its mesh design means that it will allow air to circulate through the canopy, and since it is often associated with ball gowns and wedding dresses it will give the canopy an elegant feel.

Measure the distance from ceiling to floor, then add 18 inches for seam allowances and some puddling on the floor. Double this figure since you will be creating two curtains, one for each side of the canopy.

Once you have the right amount of tulle, cut it in half, one half for each curtain. Fold 1/4 inch of the bottom of the fabric to create the bottom hem and with iron on a low setting, press in place. Fold again, press again and sew the hem in place with a straight stitch.

    • 3

Buy a hula hoop and measure its circumference. Choose a fabric that coordinates with the color of the tulle and the design of the bedroom. Cut the fabric so that it is 2 inches wide, but the same length as the circumference of the hula hoop. Pin the fabric around the hula hoop, then stitch in place. This hides the hula hoop design.

    • 4

Drape the unfinished end of the tulle over one side of the hula hoop, so that 2 inches hang over the inside edge of the hoop, and stitch in place. Repeat on the opposite side of the hula hoop.

If desired, hot glue a feather boa to the outside of the hoop.

Position the hoop over the bed so the tulle hangs gracefully down on either side. Use a pencil to mark the position. Hang three pot hanger hooks from the ceiling at even intervals from the marking. Hang the hula hoop on the pot hanger hooks and position the tulle. Stand back and admire the princess canopy.
