How to Sew Baby Bed Skirts With Inserts

As you await the arrival of your new baby, it will be a good time to decorate and prepare the nursery. Including a dust ruffle on your crib set adds a classy touch to a baby's bed. Sewing the crib skirt yourself allows you to choose whatever fabric you like and saves you money. For added utility and convenience, make a skirt with inserts that can be used for storing items.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the long side of your mattress. Add 1 inch and record the result as L. Measure the short side, add an inch and record it as W.

    • 2

Decide how many inches you want the crib skirt to hang down. Add 1 inch and record the result as H. Subtract 3 inches from H record it as P.

    • 3

Cut one rectangle of fabric with the dimensions L times W for the base piece. It won't show, so you can use scrap fabric.

    • 4

Cut two rectangles of fabric with the dimensions W times H for the ends of the skirt. Sew a 1/2-inch hem on one long side and both short sides.

    • 5

Cut two rectangles of fabric with the dimensions W times P for the pockets. Sew a 1/2-inch hem on all four sides.

    • 6

Place one end piece on a table. Put one of the pocket pieces on top, lining up two of the long finished sides. Both pieces should be facing right side up.

    • 7

Pin the two pieces together. Stitch the pocket piece to the end piece along the three aligned edges, sewing 1/4 inch from the edge. You will be sewing two short sides and one long bottom.

    • 8

Divide the one wide pocket you've created into two smaller ones. Sew the two pieces together with stitching parallel to and about halfway between the stitching on the two short sides.

    • 9

Repeat Steps 6 through 8 with the other end and pocket pieces.

    • 10

Cut two rectangles of fabric with the dimensions L times H for the front pieces of the skirt. Sew a 1/2-inch hem on one long side and both short sides.

    • 11

Center the rough edge of one of the front pieces to the long side of the base piece. Pin these pieces and then stitch them together 1/2 inch from the edge.

    • 12

Center the rough edge of one of the end pieces on the short side of the base piece. Pin these pieces and then stitch them together 1/2 inch from the edge.

    • 13

Repeat steps 11 and 12 with the remaining front and end pieces.
