Ideas for Upholstering a Headboard

Upholstering your headboard can make an ugly piece look attractive and turn an uncomfortable surface into a soft, stylish accent. A basic upholstered headboard consists of a sturdy frame covered with batting or foam and upholstery fabric. You can secure the upholstery in place with stitches, tacks, glue, buttons or ties.
  1. Modern Headboard

    • Use sharp lines and sleek fabric to create a modern headboard that looks stiff, but is soft to lean against. A large square of plywood forms the base for the creation. Attach a thick layer of foam padding to the front of the plywood to preserve the crisp shape and provide cushioning.

Shiny black fabric pulled tightly over the front of the headboard and secured with glue on the back creates a dramatic, modern look. Stormy gray chenille pulled tightly over the front and secured with silver tacks along the sides creates a simple modern look.

    Romantic Headboard

    • Bring new life to a half-circle shaped headboard with button-tufted upholstery. Any half-circle or half-oval shaped headboard works for the frame. Heavy batting pulled tightly around the frame softens the curve and provides cushioning. Brocade fabric in burgundy, gold and/or mocha secured tightly over the batting adds a regal touch and a sense of warmth. Press the fabric down to the frame with gold buttons spaced evenly in the middle-front of the headboard to create tufted folds in the brocade.

    Funky Headboard

    • Select bright colors and patterns to create an upholstered headboard with a funky flair. A four-poster bed headboard that consists of a rectangular piece of wood between two posts works as a frame for the design. Pull thin foam padding covered with thick batting tightly across the middle section of the headboard for extra soft cushioning.

Wrap the fabric over the top and under the bottom of the rectangular section to secure it to the back of the headboard. Purple satin with lilac polka dots gives the headboard a bold and whimsical style. Jade- and yellow-zigzagged chenille gives the headboard a cheerful style.

    Sophisticated Headboard

    • Add a touch of class to your bedroom with a simple headboard covered in faux suede. A rectangular piece of wood provides a tall silhouette for the design. Thin foam padding and cotton batting cover the frame tightly to preserve the crisp lines while still cushioning the wood.

Tan faux suede pulled over the front of the headboard and tacked in place on the back adds depth and texture to the piece. A thin trim of brown faux suede along the sides and top of the headboard enhances the sharp lines and creates a frame effect.
