How to Build Fabric Headboards

An upholstered headboard filled with soft padding is a great place to curl up with a good book at the end of the day. Upholstered headboards also add color and texture to a space, making that bare wall behind your bed look finished. You can upgrade your bedroom with a quick and easy headboard. Because it is covered in upholstery, you won't have to worry about matching the rest of the furniture in the room. Pick a fabric that matches your bedding and get to work.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your bed and determine what size headboard you would like. The headboard will be mounted directly to the wall and so does not need to reach all the way to the floor. Cut a piece of 3/4-inch plywood to match these dimensions, using a circular saw.

    • 2

Place your foam padding on a table. Set the plywood on top of the foam. Trace around the outside of the plywood with a permanent marker. Trim the padding with a utility knife.

    • 3

Put the fabric face down on a table. Set the batting down on top of the fabric and the foam padding top of the batting. Place the plywood directly on top of the foam. Trim any excess fabric and batting so you have roughly six inches of overlap on every side.

    • 4

Pull the fabric and batting up and over the top of the headboard. Secure the fabric and batting with a staple gun. Repeat this process on the bottom of the headboard.

    • 5

Fold the fabric and batting over the sides of the plywood. Smooth out the corners to eliminate wrinkles. Secure the fabric to the wood.

    • 6

Determine where you would like the headboard placed on the wall. Mark the spot. Check the marks with a level. Hold flush mount hanging brackets up to the wall where the headboard will be hung. Drive a screw through the holes in the bracket.

    • 7

Measure and mark the spot on the back of the headboard where the corresponding mounting bracket will be attached. Drive screws through the holes in the mounting brackets to attach the bracket to the headboard.

    • 8

Slide the brackets on the back of the headboard onto the flush mount wall brackets to secure the headboard to the wall.
