How to Convert Drawer Pulls to Knobs

Replacing drawer pulls with knobs is a simple job that you can do without advanced carpentry skills or special tools. Drawer pulls are typically installed with two screws, inserted in the back of the face of the drawer, through the face and into the drawer pull. Drawer pulls are easily removed by reversing the process, but doing so leaves two screw holes on the face of the drawer. Installing an escutcheon (back plate) on the drawer between the knob and the drawer face easily covers holes left from the old hardware.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Drill and drill bit
  • Awl

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the drawer pull by unscrewing the screws that attach the pull from the back side of the drawer face.

    • 2

Measure and mark halfway between the two holes left from the old hardware. Drill a perpendicular hole through the mark, using a drill bit that is the same diameter as the screw used to install the new knob.

    • 3

Position the escutcheon on the drawer face so the center hole in the escutcheon is positioned over the newly drilled hole and satisfactorily oriented. Holding the escutcheon in place, pass the tip of the awl through the screw holes in the escutcheon to create indentations in the drawer face. Remove the escutcheon. Use the awl to deepen the indentions. These will serve as pilot holes for the small screws used to install the escutcheon.

Reposition the escutcheon and attach it to the drawer face with the screws provided. Insert the knob screw through the hole in the back of the drawer face. Place the hole in the knob on the screw tip and rotate it clockwise while holding the screw in place with a screwdriver. Tighten and repeat to replace other drawer pulls with new knobs.
