A DIY Bamboo Headboard

A bamboo headboard will add a tropical feel to your bedroom. Create a headboard from lengths of large-diameter dark bamboo to add texture to a room with a tropical theme. If you use bamboo with a uniform diameter, this headboard would be suitable for a traditional bedroom. Choose light-colored bamboo in a range of diameters to add a natural touch to an informal room.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark the desired height of the headboard on each piece of bamboo.

    • 2

Wrap a piece of masking tape around the bamboo at this point. Saw the bamboo to the correct length. The masking tape will keep the sticks of bamboo from splitting when they are cut.

    • 3

Mark the lengths of bamboo with a pencil eight inches from the top and eight inches from the bottom. Lay the lengths of bamboo side by side on a flat surface.

    • 4

Tie a length of twine around the first piece eight inches from the top. Wrap the twine under the second piece of bamboo and over the third piece. Continue in this way along the row of bamboo, going over one, then under the next, wrapping the twine on the pencil mark and keeping the top edges of the bamboo even.

    • 5

Measure the width of your headboard frequently as you wrap. When you reach the desired width remove the remaining sticks. Wrap the twine around the last stick and work your way back to the first stick, wrapping the twine over the bamboo sticks you went under the first time, and under the sticks you went over. Pull the twine tight as you go.

    • 6

Wrap the twine from the first stick to the last stick and back a second time. Wrap the twine back to the last stick and tie the twine on the opposite side of the headboard from where you started. This will give you an extra wrap and a knot on each side for a more even look.

    • 7

Wrap the bamboo sticks in the same way eight inches from the bottom.

    • 8

Drill a 3/8-inch hole in the back of the headboard on each side. Drill it just below the twine. Hang the headboard on the wall behind the bed with two mirror-hanging hooks. Hooks designed for mirrors will support more weight than picture hooks.
