How do I Build an Arc Headboard?

One way to add some pizazz to a bedroom is by building your own distinguished headboard. An arced headboard can become the focal point of the room. Building your own headboard is straightforward, and is economical compared to store-bought headboards. You can make your bed a comfortable place to unwind by adding a thick layer of foam to the headboard. If the headboard is for a child's bed, get them involved in the project; they can help with several steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of your bed and add an inch for each side. Draw a design for your headboard, keeping the width and desired height in mind. Transfer your design to brown craft paper and cut it out for a template. Test the paper template above your bed to make sure you have the proper dimensions. Make any necessary adjustments.

    • 2

Trace your design onto your 1/4-inch plywood. Cut out the design using a portable jigsaw. Sand the edges of your headboard until they are smooth. Sand away any coarse spots on the surface of the plywood.

    • 3

Place the foam on a large, flat surface. Lay your headboard over the foam and trace the pattern onto the foam using a marker. Cut the foam to match the headboard using an electric knife or a utility knife. Fix any roughly cut edges using scissors.

Lay the fiberfill on a large, flat surface and lay the headboard over it. Cut the fiberfill in the shape of the headboard, adding 12 extra inches all around. Remove the headboard.

    • 5

Lay the covering fabric down flat (nice side down) and lay the fiberfill over the top of it. Cut the material to match the size and shape of the fiberfill. Center the cut foam on the material and fiberfill. Place the headboard over the foam.

Pull the material and fiberfill over one corner of the headboard and staple into place. Repeat the process on the next corner. Pull the material and fiberfill tight at the arc and staple in place. Turn the headboard over and look for any potential problems. Continue to staple from the top of the arc to one side, then move to the other side of the arc. Pull the material tight and staple into pleats at the corners to avoid wrinkles along the edges of the headboard. Follow up with the sides and bottom of the headboard.
