Memory Foam Mattress Specifications

Memory foam was originally developed by NASA to decrease pressure on the body associated with take-off and re-entering the earth's atmosphere. The open cell structure of memory foam allows the product to respond to body heat and conform to the body's natural shape. Memory foam mattresses relieve pressure points on the body, facilitate proper alignment of the spine and neck, and are often recommended by chiropractors.
  1. Foam Layers

    • All memory foam mattresses are constructed of several layers of foam. The more costly mattresses have more than one layer of memory foam and a base layer comprising regular foam or low-density memory foam. Less-expensive mattresses have a top layer of memory foam and a thicker bottom foundational layer of regular foam.

    Depth and Density

    • Variety exists in the depth and density of the memory foam material. Depths vary from 2.5 cm to 12.5 cm, and density can support approximately 2 to 5 lbs. per cubic foot. Optimal support is achieved by a depth of 7 cm and density of 3 to 4 lbs. per cubic foot. Exceeding these measurements does not enhance comfort or benefit. Mattresses with lower-density memory foam can sag and do not provide adequate body support.

    Warranty and Price

    • The terms of warranties vary widely. The more costly brand-name memory foam mattresses offer a warranty. A non pro-rated warranty repairs or replaces the mattress free of charge, excluding transportation costs. Less-expensive models offer a limited or no warranty.
