All memory foam mattresses are constructed of several layers of foam. The more costly mattresses have more than one layer of memory foam and a base layer comprising regular foam or low-density memory foam. Less-expensive mattresses have a top layer of memory foam and a thicker bottom foundational layer of regular foam.
Variety exists in the depth and density of the memory foam material. Depths vary from 2.5 cm to 12.5 cm, and density can support approximately 2 to 5 lbs. per cubic foot. Optimal support is achieved by a depth of 7 cm and density of 3 to 4 lbs. per cubic foot. Exceeding these measurements does not enhance comfort or benefit. Mattresses with lower-density memory foam can sag and do not provide adequate body support.
The terms of warranties vary widely. The more costly brand-name memory foam mattresses offer a warranty. A non pro-rated warranty repairs or replaces the mattress free of charge, excluding transportation costs. Less-expensive models offer a limited or no warranty.
