Standard Bed Dimensions

Whether they are meant for a single small child or two large adults, beds range in size to fulfill their intended use. Most beds fall into industry-standard sizes, with twin, full, queen and king being the most common.
  1. Standard Small Beds

    • The most common bed for a single person is the twin, which is sometimes called a single. The twin is 39 inches wide and 75 inches long. Many college dorms are equipped with an extra long twin bed, which measures 39 inches by 80 inches. Most bunk beds incorporate standard twin dimensions, although some bunk beds are only 36 inches wide.

    Full Beds

    • Full, or double, beds are commonly used by larger individuals and some couples. The standard dimensions are 54 inches wide and 75 inches long.

    Queen Beds

    • Queen beds are commonly used by couples. Standard queen beds are 60 inches wide and 80 inches long. A California queen has the same width but measures 84 inches in length. An expanded, or "super," queen has same length as a standard queen, but its width measures 66 inches.

    King Beds

    • The standard king bed is 76 inches wide and 80 inches long. A common variant is the California king, which is only 72 inches long but 84 inches wide. The less-common grand king is 80 inches wide and 98 inches long.

    Other Bed Sizes

    • Older beds might not conform to conventional dimensions.

Although most beds and mattresses sold today conform to the standard twin, full, queen or King dimensions, several specialty beds and antiques frequently fall outside of the contemporary size conventions. Many antique beds are referred to as being "three-quarters size," which is 48 inches wide and 75 inches long, or roughly similar to a full bed.
