Pillow Top vs. Plush Mattress

There are dozens of types of mattresses on the market for consumers to choose from. While pillow top and plush mattresses are both padded for a softer sleeping surface, there are many differences between the two to consider before making a purchase.
  1. Types

    • Plush mattresses are regular mattresses with a soft, cushioned layer over the surface for a softer sleeping area. Pillow top mattresses are even softer, with an attached pillow "top" covering the mattress itself instead of just a layer.

    Considerations

    • It is important to consider your sleeping arrangements and physical condition when picking out a mattress. Plush mattresses provide more support than pillow top mattresses, but a firmer mattress is not always best for all types of back or physical health issues. In some cases, a pillow top mattress may be more comfortable for certain conditions.

    Disadvantages

    • Plush mattresses are less luxurious than pillow top mattresses, and may be less comfortable depending on the consumer's individual preferences. However, pillow top mattresses are often more expensive, cannot be flipped over to extend their lifespan, and may require larger sheets to accommodate their thickness.
