Murphy Bed Hardware Specifications

A Murphy bed, or pull-down bed, is a space-saving alternative to a traditional horizontal-only bed frame. The Murphy bed has a hinged frame that allows it to pivot to an upright position against a wall. Murphy beds can be as simple as a mattress-only unit that, when vertical, is held in position by wall-mounted straps. However, Murphy beds can also come with comfort features such as lighting and bookshelves. Hardware specifications vary slightly by bed model.

  1. Side-Mount Murphy Bed Hardware Specifications

    • A side-mount Murphy bed attaches the long side of a bed to a wall mounting system. This system incorporates a piston lift system, steel pivot pin and bracket points, but no springs. Side-mount hardware can be purchased for twin, full or queen sizes. Finished sizes are 47 3/8 inches high by 79 inches wide (twin), 62 5/16 inches high by 79 inches wide (full) and 68 5/16 inches high by 84 inches wide (queen).

    Vertical Mount Murphy Bed Hardware Specifications

    • The vertical mount Murphy bed attaches to the head of the bed frame, and often incorporates side cabinets or shelving. The vertical mount Murphy bed also uses a piston lift system rather than old-fashioned springs. Steel pivot pins and bracket points help counterbalance the steel or aluminum bed frame. Finished sizes for vertical mount beds are twin: 82 1/16 inches high and 42 7/8 inches wide; for full, 82 1/16 inches high by 57 7/8 inches wide; for queen, 87 1/16 inches high by 63 7/8 inches wide.

    Sofa Wall Murphy Bed Hardware Specifications

    • A variation of the Murphy bed incorporates side cabinets and a sofa. The sofa is attached directly to the center console: When the bed is lowered, the sofa side arms frame each side of the mattress. The sofa wall Murphy bed cabinet comes in sizes twin (43 inches wide, 21 inches deep, 87 inches high); full (57 inches wide, 21 inches deep, 87 inches high); queen (64 inches wide, 21 inches deep, 92 inches high); and king (84 inches wide, 21 inches deep, 92 inches high). Piston lifts, springs, metal brackets and gate latches are part of the hardware required for installation.
