Use a light paint color on the walls and ceiling. Generally, lighter colors make a small space look larger, while dark colors make it look even smaller. A few examples of colors to use are cream, soft green and icy blue.
Paint the trim even lighter than the walls and ceiling. The lighter trim helps to visually push the walls farther back than they actually are, instantly opening up the room and making it appear bigger.
Use furniture sparingly. A room looks larger if furniture doesn't cover every wall. When using furniture sparingly, make each piece multi-functional. Use combination furniture, such as a fold-out couch for the bed, or a bed that includes storage space.
Arrange the furniture strategically. Avoid placing furniture where it blocks any outside views of the room, such as doorways, windows or hallways. Place at least one piece of furniture, such as a dresser or cabinet, at an angle to create a diagonal line. Diagonal lines help to visually open up a room.
Keep windows open to let in plenty of natural light, and add light fixtures throughout the room. The more lit up the room is, the larger it will look.
Hang a few mirrors. Mirrors create the illusion of more space, so a few hanging on the walls will make a room look much larger than it actually is.
