How to Get Rid of Cigarette Smoke From Wood

You just purchased a beautiful antique dresser from an anonymous seller online and have been anticipating its arrival for days. When it is finally delivered and signed for, you carry it up to your bedroom. You place it exactly where you planned and it fits perfectly. You arrange your clothes neatly, drawer by drawer. Over the next couple of days you start noticing that your clothes smell like smoke. It does not take long for you to realize that the dresser is the culprit and whoever owned this for decades before must have smoked five packs of cigarettes a day.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the wooden furniture from the room. Bring it outdoors to your backyard or front lawn. If removing the wood is not possible, proceed to the next steps.

    • 2

Fill a large bowl with white vinegar. Vinegar neutralizes odors quite effectively and is a great solution for getting rid of most unpleasant smells.

    • 3

Dip a sponge into the vinegar and scrub your furniture. Make sure to cover as much area as possible. Over the years, smoke has probably been absorbed into every square inch, not just the outer surfaces. Scrub the drawers, the underside and any other exposed sections.

Allow the furniture to dry. Depending on the weather, this may take anywhere from a couple of hours to a full day. If you scrubbed the wood indoors, then try using a hairdryer to speed up the process. Once the furniture is dry, you can bring it back into your home, leaving the nasty smell of cigarette smoke behind.
