Replacing a Sofa Sleeper Mattress

A sofa sleeper is a couch or sofa that has a pull-out bed built inside. This can be convenient if you have limited space for a guest bed. For daily use it is a couch, but for guests, it becomes an overnight place to sleep. Eventually the mattress can become worn out from folding, unfolding, and normal wear and tear. Another reason to replace the mattress is to replace it with a more comfortable one.

Whatever the reason, sofa sleepers are usually much more expensive than regular sofas. If the sofa is still in good shape, you don't need to replace the entire sofa sleeper, simply replace the mattress.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the sofa cushions to reveal the bed frame and mattress. Fully unfold the mattress and frame.

    • 2

Remove any sheets or covers that may be on the mattress. Inspect the underside of the mattress, specifically the corners to locate any ties or clasps that may be holding the mattress to the frame structure. Untie or unclasp these holding mechanisms.

    • 3

Pick up the end of the mattress furthest from the sofa and lift upwards, folding the mattress toward the top of the mattress as you lift. Lift up the folded up mattress and place it out of the way.

    • 4

Lay the new mattress on top of the frame. Verify that the mattress is facing in the proper direction. If there are ties or clasps, these should be on the bottom of the mattress. Double check to make sure the mattress is positioned properly, as the mattress should not be crooked or hanging over the edges of the frame. Connect the holding ties or clasps if the mattress has them.

    • 5

Replace the sheets or mattress cover if you removed them initially. Lift up the far end of the frame and fold it up over the center section. Fold in the legs and fold once again. Gently push the folded frame into the frame of the sofa and replace the cushions.
