How to Use a Plastic Water Bed Drain

A plastic water bed drain is a short length of plastic tubing, typically 4 inches long, with a molded coupler on one end for connecting to a garden hose. The other end of the drain is smooth and round, an inch in diameter, which is the precise size of a water bed fill valve. Connecting the plastic drain to the water bed and a garden hose lets you siphon the water out of the mattress so the bed can be moved, dismantled or cleaned.

Instructions

    • 1

Attach the plastic water bed drain to the threaded coupler on the garden hose. Use the hose end with the fixed coupler, not the end with the rotating coupler. Twist the plastic drain clockwise to secure it to the hose.

    • 2

Unplug the water bed heater from the electrical outlet.

    • 3

Run the other end of the hose to a bathtub or sink, or out a window where the water can drain safely. Lower the window to rest on the hose so it cannot fall back inside the building and flood the floor.

    • 4

Remove the cap on the fill valve of the water bed mattress and insert the plastic drain tube into the valve as far as it will go.

    • 5

Suck on the open end of the garden hose as you would draw liquid up through a straw. It may be necessary to crimp the hose near the open end so you can catch your breath and continue drawing water up through the hose. When the water reaches the open end, quickly lower the hose through the window, or into the sink or bathtub. The resulting siphon will draw out the water from the mattress if the end of the draining hose remains lower than the end connected to the water bed.
