How to Convert a Full to Queen Bed With Bolting on the Rails?

If your bed frame is full-size and too small, you can convert it to hold a queen mattress, which will add 5 inches of length and 6 inches of width to your sleeping area. The process is simple and doesn't require permanent modification of your bed. In fact, you can easily revert it back to full-size. The instructions here are for beds with rails that attach to the headboard and footboard with bolts.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Disassemble your full-size bed. Set the full-size mattress, box spring and rails aside. Donate or discard them, or store them if you plan on converting your bed back to full-size some day.

    • 2

Open up the box containing your converter kit and take an inventory of all parts. Check them against the parts list included with the kit to make sure you have everything you need.

    • 3

Attach the headboard and footboard to the new converter kit rails with the bolts included in the kit. Tighten the bolts with a wrench. Do not over-tighten.

    • 4

Attach the middle support bar with the hardware provided in the kit. Adjust the support bar's height so its leg sits on the floor and it can firmly support the middle portion of the queen box spring and mattress.

    • 5

Secure the retainer brackets, which help hold the queen mattress in its proper place. There are four of these brackets: two for each side rail. Use the hardware provided in the kit to attach them to the predrilled holes on the converter rails.

    • 6

Set the queen-size box spring on top of the rails and the queen-size mattress on top of the box spring. The mattress and box spring will extend over the sides of the rails, but the retainer brackets will keep them in place. Snug up the retainer brackets to fit the box spring's sides. Tighten the retainer brackets, then lock them in place using the hardware provided in the kit.
