How to Assemble a Waterbed Frame

In contrast with traditional mattresses, a waterbed's vinyl mattress is hypo-allergenic, possibly providing relief from allergy symptoms for sufferers. A waterbed may also provide relief from backaches, arthritis, insomnia and bed sores for some sufferers When assembling a waterbed, the main consideration is safety. An improperly installed waterbed frame can cause leaking, sagging and may lead to tears in the mattress or safety lining under the mattress. A waterbed is heavy and cannot be moved when filled, so make sure that the bed frame is in the desired location and that the frame is sturdy and secure before attempting to fill the mattress.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the waterbed frame on the floor in the area where it will be used.

    • 2

Attach the headboard to the side rails with the provided screws and attach the foot board.

    • 3

Lay out the riser pedestal pieces inside the frame. Insert the corner brackets on the corners of the riser pedestal to connect the pedestal frame and insert the center supports in the slots. If the pedestal base has drawers, lay the drawers in place.

    • 4

Center the pedestal in the outer waterbed frame by measuring the distance between the frame and the inner pedestal all the way around. Adjust the pedestal as needed. Make sure the outer frame is exactly where you want it before centering the pedestal and then remove the frame without disturbing the position of the pedestal.

    • 5

Lay the decking boards over the pedestal. Make sure the boards overhang the pedestal equally so that the waterbed is supported on all sides. Place the board with the cut corner on the outside with the cut toward the top so you can install the heating controls within reach.

    • 6

Set the frame over the deck boards. Attach the provided "L" brackets with screws to secure the frame to the deck boards. Attach two to three brackets on each side of the frame.

    • 7

Attach the decorative or bookcase headboard with the provided "L" brackets.

    • 8

Press the rail caps into place over the rails of the frame.

    • 9

Mount the thermostat on the side or bottom of the frame following the manufacturer's recommendations. Attach the thermostat near the outlet where it will be plugged in.

    • 10

Insert the cord from the heating pad into the thermostat and place the heating pad in the center of the decking. Do not lay the heating pad over cracks in the decking area.

    • 11

Pull the sensor tube from the thermostat through the cut-out in the decking and position the tube at least 12 inches from the heating pad.

    • 12

Lay out the safety liner in the waterbed frame and carefully smooth out any wrinkles.

    • 13

Lay the waterbed mattress into the frame over the safety liner with the fill valve toward the bottom of the bed, making sure the corners of the mattress line up with the corners of the frame. Smooth the wrinkles in the waterbed mattress but be careful not to move the safety liner.

    • 14

Fill the waterbed mattress with water.
