How to Convert a Double Bed Frame for a Queen Mattress

Whether your full-size bed is an antique or brand new, you may find that it's a little too small, especially if more than one person sleeps on it each night. If you'd like more room but want to keep your bed, you can install a special converter kit that will allow you to use a queen-size mattress on your full-size headboard and footboard. A queen-size mattress is 6 inches wider and 4 inches longer than a full-size mattress, giving you a bit of extra room.

Instructions

    • 1

Look at your headboard and footboard to see whether your the bed rails attach with bolts or with hooks. Purchase a converter kit that attaches in the same manner.

    • 2

Take your full-size bed apart. Remove the mattress, box spring and rails. Keep them if you think that some day you may want to convert your bed back to a full size. Otherwise, donate them or throw them out.

    • 3

Attach the converter kits rails to your headboard and footboard. If your rails have hooks, gently slide them into the slots on the headboard and footboard until they shift into place and feel sturdy. If your rails use nuts and bolts, bolt the pieces together securely but do not over tighten.

    • 4

Swing out the middle support bars and secure them together with the included clamp. Adjust the middle support bar's glide height so that it is about 1/4 inch above the floor.

    • 5

Attach two side brackets to each side rail, using the included hardware and predrilled holes on the rails.

    • 6

Position your queen-size box spring on the converter rails. The box spring will extend beyond the width of the headboard and footboard a few inches on each side; the four side brackets will hold it securely in place. Snug up the side brackets so that they hug the box spring firmly. Lock the side brackets in place using wingnuts or other hardware provided. Place the mattress on top of the box spring.
