Assembly Directions for a C-Style Metal Futon

Arrange the parts, hardware and any tools supplied with the futon kit in an organized manner -- pair all similar parts together. Compare the parts, hardware and tools with the list of all supplied goods provided by the futon's manufacturer. Contact the manufacturer if you are missing any pieces or if any pieces are broken.

Align the head end and foot end of the bottom bed frame with the two main side frames. Insert the proper bolts into the appropriate holes. Fasten the bolts into place by threading on and tightening nuts. Use an adjustable wrench or the special tool supplied with your futon kit. Have a friend hold the side frames upright during installation. The side frames form a C-shape; make sure the opening of the C portion of the frame faces the front end of the bed.

Align the head end and foot end of the top bed frame with the two main side frames and attach the parts of the frame together with the proper bolts and nuts. Make sure all bolts are securely tightened.

Assemble the support bars on the top bunk. The support bars are the horizontal bars on which the mattress rests. Some support bars are separately installed, one by one, while others are factory built into one large frame. Insert the proper bolts into the appropriate holes, usually located directly on the inside of the frame. Secure the bolts by threading on and tightening the appropriate nuts.

Attach the backrest of the futon frame to the bottom bed frame. Insert the bottom of the backrest into the grooves on the side frame, insert the proper bolts into the appropriate holes, thread on nuts and tighten the nuts to secure the backrest into place.

Insert the end of the seat of the futon without the handles into the grooves on the side frame. Push the seat until it comes close to meeting the backrest. Insert the proper bolts into the appropriate holes and tighten a nut onto each bolt to secure the seat of the futon frame to the side frames.

Hold the handle up to the two holes located on the underside of the front end of the futon seat, insert the appropriate two bolts and tighten them into place.

Insert the U-shaped clip into the two holes located in the middle portion of the futon -- one hole is on the backrest and the other is on the futon seat. Push the clip into the holes to join the two pieces of frame together. Test the futon alignment by pulling the seat handle upward and unfolding the frame into a bed. If the bed does not lie flat, adjust the alignment of the frames and make sure the U-shaped clip is fully inserted into the holes.

Attach the top bunk guardrails. Hold the rear rail up to the frame and attach it to the top bunk with the appropriate nuts and bolts. Attach the front rail to the frame by inserting the appropriate nuts and bolts into the correct holes and tightening them into place.

Double-check all bolts and make sure they are tight before putting any weight on the frame.
