Bedroom Furnishings for Teens

When children grow into their teenage years, their rooms need a makeover. Though the princess- or cowboy-themed rooms of yesteryear were appropriate at the time, teenagers have different aesthetic tastes and practical needs for their bedrooms. The overall design of the room is up to you and the teenager. No matter what, though, some furnishings are necessities.
  1. The Bed

    • The bed is the centerpiece of any bedroom. Though a twin mattress is well-suited for smaller spaces, your teen may find that a full is a more comfortable fit. The bed's trappings set the tone for the entire room, so consider different options. For example, a canopy bed gives the room a whimsical, relaxed feel. A brushed aluminum or stainless steel bed exudes a modern look.

    Seating

    • Teenagers need a place to sprawl out and relax other than where they sleep. If space allows, furnish the room with spare seating. Not only does this give the room's occupant a place to sit, but it also provides seating for when friends visit. A small love seat or chair gives teenagers a place to sit and relax, while other options like a small bench at the foot of the bed provide a space to sit and put on shoes.

    Storage

    • Every teenager needs ample storage, especially for clothes. Furnishing the room with dressers is an absolute must, but don't forget about other things that need storage space. A bookcase, for example, gives your teen a place to shelve books, school binders and small picture frames. For cramped spaces, under-the-bed storage tucks away belongings that don't need to be readily available.

    Electronics

    • As teens grow up in a digital age, rooms should be furnished accordingly. Desks should be outfitted with space for a computer and keyboard, including room for a tower central processing unit, if need be. Desks should include storage space for supplies like printer paper, USB cords and blank CDs. If your teen keeps electronic equipment like a television or a stereo in the room, provide space for storing these items. Balancing a television on top of a bookshelf, for example, may prove dangerous.
