Instructions on How to Sew Patio Furniture

Patio furniture exposed to the summer elements has the tendency to be damaged by water and/or the sun and wear out easily. With some basic sewing skills and techniques, cushions for patio chairs, loungers and benches as well as decorative pillows can be created to replace the damaged cushions and covers. You can also customize your patio furniture and save money instead of buying costly commercial replacement cushions.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and width of the patio furniture you want to cover. For patio chairs, loungers and benches, measure the surface area of both the seat and backrest sections of the furniture. For small patio pillows you will only need to measure the front and back panels.

    • 2

Measure the depth of the foam you have chosen to stuff your patio cushions with.

    • 3

Design a pattern for your patio furniture by graphing the length and width measurements on paper for each cushion. The patio furniture will require a pattern for the front, back and sides of each cushion you want to create. Add a 5/8-inch seam allowance around the edges of your pattern.

    • 4

Pin your paper pattern on to the weatherproof fabric you have chosen, and trace along the edges. Cut out the fabric with scissors, following carefully along the edges of your pattern.

    • 5

Pin fabric together inside out ensuring that the ends are even. Sew together along edge of fabric evenly on three sides only. Sew in zipper on fourth side of cushion. Bind off thread.

    • 6

Turn the cushion inside out. Take note of the corners of the fabric, if the corners don't turn out completely, you may have to use a pointed object to create a fully turned-out corner edge; alternatively, you may have to cut away some of the seam allowance to create a proper corner. The foam stuffing will not fix properly if the corners are not turned out fully. Once you are satisfied with the cushion, stuff with foam.
