How to Mount an Upholstered Headboard

Find the studs in the wall where the headboard will be hung. If you have a stud finder, use that to check for where the studs are located. Otherwise, knock your fist against the wall. If the house is newer, you should hear a stud approximately every 16 inches. If the house is older, the placement might be more erratic. If it sounds hollow, there is no stud. Mark on the wall with pencil where you find the studs.

Position your headboard in place on the wall, making note of where your studs are located. Mark on the back of the headboard in pencil where your brackets should be installed to line up with the studs in the wall.

Find the right mounting brackets for the back of your headboard. Many different types of brackets are available at home supply stores that will allow your headboard to sit flush with the wall. If the headboard features a lip that pushes the back of the headboard out from the wall, L-shaped brackets will work well.

Install the mounting brackets into the wall. Pre-drill the holes ¼ inch to help guide the screws in place. Follow with the screws to hold the mounting brackets in place.

Attach the headboard to the brackets with a screwdriver or drill. If your bracket is one that hangs flush, you may have to slide the headboard in place over the bracket and let it support the weight of the headboard. If it is an L-shaped bracket, mount one side of the bracket to the wall and the other side to the side of the headboard.
