Measure the width of the bed, including the frame. Have unfinished picket fencing cut to your measurements at a hardware store or lumberyard.
Paint and decorate one side of the fence with craft paints; allow to dry. Seal with polyurethane.
Measure and mark the space on the wall where you want the picket fence headboard placed.
Use a handheld drill to secure the finished fence to the wall with screws, placing screws at the top and bottom of each picket and at 6-inch intervals along each side.
Measure the width of the bed, including the frame, as well as the height you want the headboard to be. Three to four feet, as measured from the frame, is an ideal height.
Have ½-inch plywood sheeting cut to your measurements at a hardware store or lumberyard.
Have 2-inch cotton batting cut to the exact measurements of the plywood at a fabric store. Have fabric cut to the same measurement, but with an additional three inches on all sides.
Cover the surface of one side of the plywood with cotton batting. Secure with staples at 6-inch intervals on all sides.
Cover the batting with fabric.
Wrap the fabric over the edge of the plywood. Secure all the way around with staples at 1-inch intervals, pulling taught as you go to avoid wrinkles or gaps.
Secure the finished headboard to the wall with screws at 6-inch intervals along each side.
Measure the width of the bed, including the frame, as well as the height you want your headboard to be. Three to four feet as measured from the frame is ideal.
