Styles for Canopy Bedding

For many homeowners, a canopy bed can instantly transform their bedroom into an elegant, romantic retreat. While a bed may be purchased specifically for use as a canopy style, a standard bed can also be fitted with canopy curtains to give it a more stylish look. If you are interested in adding a canopy bed to your bedroom, there are several styles to choose from. Purchasing a ready-made canopy may not fit all budgets, but one of the alternative canopy bedding styles may be the ideal option for your home.
  1. Full Canopy Curtains

    • For a dramatic look that ensures total privacy, full canopy curtains are an ideal bedding option. These curtains surround the bed on all four sides, so the curtains may be closed to completely hide the bed from view. In most cases, full canopy curtains are used on four-poster canopy beds with a frame around the top to hang the curtains. The top of the frame may be covered with fabric as well to create a roof for the bed. However, you may also use curtain rods affixed to the ceiling to turn a regular bed into a full canopy as well. A four-poster full canopy bed can easily be moved throughout the room while the curtain rods must be taken down and reinstalled if you want to change the placement of your bed.

    Crown Canopy Curtains

    • A bed with a crown canopy features fabric or curtains that hang over the head of the bed. The fabric canopy may be draped over a frame that is affixed to the wall over the bed, but posts on either side of the bed may also be used. Typically, the canopy rises to a triangle shape and drapes down on each side. It is usually narrower than the bed itself, but the fabric may be attached to the bed's sides so it is not in the way when the bed is in use.

    Ring Canopy Curtains

    • For the look of a four-poster bed, use ring canopy curtains with your bed. These curtains call for metal rings to be affixed to the ceiling above the bed's four corners. Drape fabric through the rings so it reaches or hangs just above the floor. Your bed will not be enclosed by the canopy curtains, but the hanging fabric will mimic the look of four posters for your bed, giving it a luxurious, elegant appearance.

    Swagged Canopy Curtains

    • The simplest way to add canopy curtains to your bed is the swagged method. For this style, a rod is installed above the head of the bed so it extends over each side of the mattress. Two additional, shorter rods are installed below and are positioned to rest over the corners above the bed. Fabric is draped over the highest rod while the excess is draped over the other rods to create a tent-like feel for the bed.
