How to Compare Sizes of Double & Queen Beds

When it comes to the bed you're choosing, you are most likely going to be making a substantial investment. With the bed, you will be purchasing a bed frame, a mattress and all the bedding, such as sheets, blankets and a quilt. All of these various items need to match up in size and shape. If you're choosing between a double and a queen-size bed, then you're going to have some comparing to do before you start making these purchases.

Instructions

Look into the actual sizes of a double and queen-size bed. A double, also called a full, is generally 53 inches wide and 75 inches long. A queen, on the other hand, is 60 inches wide and 80 inches long.

Measure the amount of space you have in your room. You want to make sure there's plenty of space to move on either side of the bed once it's in place. You might also want to have nightstands on either side. If you have a very small room, a queen-size bed might be too large.

Check out some double and queen-size beds in person. Many furniture stores have floor models set up. This will give you a better idea of what each size looks like.

Lie down on some double and queen sized mattresses. If you're going to be sharing the bed with your partner, ask them to come along and lie on the mattresses with you. The Better Sleep Council does not recommend sharing a double bed with another person because you are only left with less than 27 inches of space across per person. However, they also recommend only sharing a queen if you enjoy sleeping closely with your partner and neither of you move around a lot. Either way, actually lying on the different mattress sizes will help you compare.
