Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the mattress. You can make the headboard the same size as the mattress or add a few inches on both sides to make a frame for the bed. This is the width you need to cut the plywood.

Measure the plywood to the correct width and make a mark. Use the straight edge to make a line at the mark.

    • 2

Measure from the height of the bed to the height you want the headboard to be. Average size is 24 inches above the top of the mattress. Use the tape measure to measure this distance on the plywood and make a mark with the pencil. Use the straight edge to extend this line to cross with the line from the last step. This will create a rectangle from the sheet of plywood that will be the base for the headboard.

    • 3

Cut the rectangle from the plywood with the circular saw.

    • 4

Place the egg crate on the plywood rectangle and cut to the same shape with a utility knife.

    • 5

Spray the surface of the plywood with spray adhesive and place the foam egg crate with the bumpy side facing down on the plywood.

    • 6

Cut the batting or muslin leaving about 2 inches all around the headboard. Staple the muslin in place with the staple gun along the backside of the headboard, keeping the fabric tight all the way around.

    • 7

Cut the fabric with about 2 inches extra all the way around the headboard. Place the fabric with the right side down and line the headboard on top of it with the batting side down. Begin at one corner and staple the fabric in place. Continue stapling the fabric all the way around, keeping the fabric tight.

Screw the headboard directly into the wall, or mount with brackets.
