Substitute for a Footboard

Bedroom furniture is very personal and opinions about it vary widely. Some people prefer a footboard and headboard together, while others opt for a platform bed. To this end, the options for bedroom furniture are seemingly endless. If you prefer a bed without a footboard, but appreciate the balanced look of a headboard and footboard, there are alternatives you can consider that offer added conveniences, such as storage.
  1. Bench

    • One stylish option for replacing a footboard is to add a bench at the foot of your bed to help balance the headboard. Select one slightly narrower than the width of your bed, in a style that suits the look of your bedroom. You can select a simple style, or one with hidden compartments for added storage. Because benches are so popular for bedrooms, entryways and even living rooms, it is easy to find one to suit your style.

    Trunk

    • For a more vintage-inspired look, consider putting a trunk at the end of your bed in lieu of a footboard. Similar to a bench, a trunk offers storage, a place to sit and also helps visually balance the headboard. Modern trunks can be found at many furniture stores, but for a weathered-looking trunk, try shopping at antique stores or flea markets.

    Pair of Chairs

    • If your bedroom is large enough to accommodate more furniture, add two chairs to the foot of your bed, facing away from the bed. Add a small side table and throw to create a cozy reading nook. If your bedroom is on the small side, you can add just one chair without a side table.

    Small Work Desk

    • Especially ideal for small dwellings lacking a designated office, a small desk at the foot of a bed can balance the look of the headboard and also offer a convenient work surface. To avoid making your bedroom look like a corporate office, select a desk that is narrower than your bed and blends in with your style. Avoid typical office colors, such as grey. Look for added details -- glass knobs or carved legs, for instance.
