Remove any hardware attached to the furniture. Sand the exterior surfaces of the furniture with a palm sander, creating a slightly grainy surface.
Fill any dents with wood filler, following the manufacturer instructions. Select the lightest-colored wood filler available to make painting easier. Allow the wood filler to dry thoroughly, at least 12 hours.
Apply an even coat of a white, glossy, latex spray paint to the furniture. Apply an additional coat once dry if necessary. Remember that multiple thin coats create a cleaner paint job than fewer, heavier coats.
Install updated handles and drawer-pulls on your furniture pieces. New, modern hardware is a simple and inexpensive way to bring older furniture up to date.
