Lever Lock Key

• Lever locks are commonly seen in antique furniture and are known as a type of skeleton key due to the skeleton-like shape of the lock hole. This lock requires a key that has notches on the sides that fit into a hole that has three to five levers. A five-lever lock is more prized due to higher security capabilities; however, it is not considered the best choice for high security needs such as protecting against robbery or for child safety.

Pin Tumbler Key

• Many people believe that ancient Egyptians invented the pin tumbler lock over 4,000 years ago. The Egyptian version of a pin lock was very large and made out of wood, while today the lock is very sophisticated and provides good security. A pin tumbler key is used for a pin tumbler lock. With this type of lock, the manufacturer places pins of different lengths in the lock, which function as the key code. Once a key is inserted into the lock, the pins will move based on the ridges of the key. These locks are common for dressers because they provide better security for valuables.

Plunger Lock Key

• A plunger lock is a unique device that can be used to secure dresser drawers. This type works for sliding furniture such as cabinets, drawers and sliding doors. The lock has a spring-loaded cylinder that is pushed in to lock the device. A master key, or key specific to the lock, is used to open the lock. Keys associated with this lock are usually smaller than other standard keys.

Cam Lock Keys

• Cam locks are another type of lock used to fasten doors, cabinets and furniture drawers. A cam lock consists of two pieces: the cam, which is the piece that actually locks by rotating, and the base, which is where the key is inserted. Cam locks usually require a 2-bit key specialized for the lock, or a master key that can be used with other locks.
