How to Build a Circular Night Stand

Square and rectangular nightstands may fit perfectly into the nook beside your bed, but round nightstands offer an exotic touch. Their curving lines offer visual interest and break up the rigid edges and corners in your bedroom, giving it a softer appearance.

While most round nightstands don't have the storage of their angular cousins, they can be smaller and more delicate, accessorizing rather than dominating your room. You don't even have to search far and wide for one of these little beauties; you can make one at home from recycled materials.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a large, wooden spool in a space that can't be ruined by sawdust or paint stains. These giant spools come in several sizes and used to hold cable or wire. You can get them at industrial shops or secondhand stores.

    • 2

Sand the entire spool with coarse sandpaper. Wipe it down with cheesecloth to remove the sawdust and sand it again with fine sandpaper. Wipe it down once more. This gives the spool a smooth finish.

    • 3

Spray paint the spool any color you like. You may want a subtle, country look with creamy white paint or a more industrial feel with hammered copper paint. Your style is your only limit. Let the paint dry overnight.

    • 4

Peel the paper backing off of four non-skid rubber feet. These clear little rubber bubbles protect wood floors from chair marks; in this case, they'll keep your table top in place. Press the feet onto the top of your spool, arranging them in a square around the central hole.

Set a circular glass table top on top of the non-skid feet. You can get these tops at hardware stores. Some stores may even cut the glass to size for a nominal fee.
