How to Build a Headboard & Footboard

If you want to create a whole new look for your bedroom, there are many different options. For example, you can go to a nearby furniture store and purchase a new headboard and footboard. However, this purchase can be expensive, and you are likely not getting an original piece. An alternative is to build your own headboard and footboard with your own unique style -- and for a fraction of the price of purchasing one.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of the bed frame that the headboard and footboard will be used with. This will determine the length you use. The height is up to you. When measuring the height, be sure to measure from where the feet you're attaching will end to get a god idea of the actual height.

    • 2

Trace the pattern you want for your headboard and footboard onto large pieces of wood. Plywood works well. For a more creative look, you can use new or used bifold doors as the wood option. The pattern can be simple and square or you can arch the center for a softer appearance.

    • 3

Cut out your pattern using a circular saw. If you got very creative and have more intricate details to cut out, a jigsaw might work better.

    • 4

Add a crown molding to the top of square headboards and footboards. This is a great way to add more character to your project. Premade molding can be attached easily with wood glue and 4d finishing nails installed every 6 to 8 inches.

    • 5

Create holes at each bottom corner of the headboard and footboard using a drill/driver. The bit you choose should be a bit smaller than the size of the bolts on the headboard's and footboard's premade feet.

    • 6

Attach the feet to the bottom of the headboard and footboard by simply screwing them into the holes you created with the drill/driver

    • 7

Apply wood stain or paint to the headboard and footboard so that all the pieces match. Let it dry.

    • 8

Use 1 1/2-inch screws to install the footboard to the base of the bed frame and the headboard to the front of the bed frame.
