How to Build Loft Beds in Small Spaces

When you are working within a small space to create a bedroom, the options for furniture might be very slim. Common examples of small spaces include spare bedrooms in apartments, a home office being converted into a bedroom and dorm rooms. To help you save space in the tiny room, you can choose to build a loft bed. A loft bed is raised up off the ground so that the space below it can still be used for additional furniture, such as a dresser or desk.

Instructions

    • 1

Plan to use 2x6 lengths of lumber for all of the pieces of the loft bed except for the ladder rungs and the side rails, which can be made with 2x4s instead.

    • 2

Draft a plan for your loft bed using the wood dimensions listed above. This plan will include the lengths for all the lumber you need. The frame needs to be able to accommodate the mattress you plan to use. The posts need to hold the bed high enough to utilize the space underneath. You need four 2x6s for the posts, four for the sides and one to stabilize the back. You also need four 2x4s for the side rails and three 2x4s for ladder rungs on each side, totaling six ladder rungs. (See Reference section.) You will also need to attach a sheet of plywood underneath for the mattress to sit on.

    • 3

Cut the wood. You can purchase the lumber precut to fit your dimensions, or you can cut it yourself with a handsaw or circular saw. Sand the wood smooth on all sides once it's cut.

    • 4

Assemble the frame. The frame consists of the four posts and the four sides, as well as one extra length of wood along the back side about halfway down for extra stabilization. (See Reference section.) Connect the pieces first with wood glue and then with heavy-duty 3/8-inch bolts. Be sure to attach the sides far enough down on the posts that the mattress and side rails will easily fit.

    • 5

Attach the ladder rungs and side rails using the same assembly method you used above.

    • 6

Connect the thick sheet of plywood to the bottom edge of the four sides. Use wood glue and 3/8-inch bolts every few inches to ensure a tight fit. This is what the mattress will sit on top of, so you want to make sure it's extra secure.
