How to Make False Bottom Items

False bottoms effectively ensure that your valuable possessions are kept out of sight. False bottoms are often seen in spy movies as part of a briefcase or car trunk as a means of concealing and transporting jewels or valuable information. However, they serve just as usefully in the home if you often have prying guests visiting or live in college dormitories and don't trust your roommates. Many types of false bottoms exist. The most common, however, is the false drawer which can be effectively set up in less than an hour.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose which drawer you want to have a false bottom. Depth is clearly important here, so pick one that is at least eight inches deep. A drawer that is quite shallow will not have room for a false bottom. Even if you do manage to fit one, the lack of remaining space might cause rather than deflect attention from a prying visitor.

    • 2

Remove the drawer from its slot and take its measurements using a measuring tape. Write down the length and width of the drawer.

    • 3

Purchase wood from a hardware store that matches the dimensions of your drawer. As well as being the same size, the wood should be the same style and finish as your original drawer.

    • 4

Lay out the piece of wood on a table or other flat surface. Attach a screw to each of the four corners of the wood using an electric screwdriver. Drill through until the head of each screw is flat against the surface of the wood.

    • 5

Disguise the screws. Additional screw heads will look distinctly out of place on a drawer's interior. These can be hidden by applying a wood filler stick to the screw heads so it looks the same as the surrounding wood.

    • 6

Finish the wood. Sand down and/or varnish the piece of wood so that it looks identical to the rest of the drawers. Only the visible side of the drawer needs to be finished in this way as the underside should never be seen.

    • 7

Turn the piece of wood over. Remove any grit or debris from the screw tips. Fit a rubber tip to the point of each screw. This will help the wood balance more securely in the drawer and prevent the screws from scratching the drawer's surfaces.

Position the piece of wood in your chosen drawer. Your private items now have an extra layer of security from prying eyes.
