How to Design a Jewelry Hutch

Jewelry gets tangled and lost when there is no set place to store the pieces. Save space in your bedroom and organize your jewelry at the same time with a jewelry hutch. Not only does the hutch serve as a storage facility for your jewelry, hutches don't take up floor space the same way an armoire does. They can sit on top of a dresser or another table in the room. It can also be the beginning of a new interior design project for the bedroom or the room that you want to place the hutch in. Your design can be as intricate or as simple as your imagination will allow.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw out your design on paper. Use a ruler to measure the dresser or table top that you want to attach the hutch to ensure you have accurate measurements. Decide on the dimensions that work best with the amount of jewelry you plan to store and the space you have available on top of your dresser.

    • 2

Determine the number of drawers and doors that you will have on your jewelry hutch, if any. Calculate the size of the drawers. Estimate the distance between hooks to hang necklaces.

    • 3

Match the wood of the hutch to the wood of the dresser or table that you will rest the hutch on top of. Take pictures of it and take those pictures to a furniture store, if you're not sure what type of wood it is.

    • 4

Buy wood from a home design, wood crafts supplier or home furnishing store. Get a few feet more than you need, just in case you make mistakes on a piece of wood, such as cutting it too short to fit the project.

    • 5

Gather the equipment you will need such as a power saw, hand chisel, drawer handles, nails, hinges and hooks and sandpaper. Comparison shop online at different home improvement stores before you go out and buy.

    • 6

Cut the wood to the sizes specified in your drawing for the base cabinet of the hutch. Cut the top, bottom and side panels. Smooth out the edges of the wood with an electric sander or do it by hand with sandpaper.

    • 7

Attach the side panels using evenly spaced nails into opposing sides of the hutch's back panel. Place the hood piece on top of the side panels and the back panel until the edges are evenly matched.

    • 8

Nail the hood of the hutch onto the back panel of the hutch and the tops of the side panels. Attach diagonal metal braces inside the assembled side panels for support and to keep the structure in place.

    • 9

Draw the measurements for the drawers, shelves and inner walls in pencil on the face of the back panel of the hutch. Align the wood for the inner walls to your penciled in sketches. Hammer in the nails for the inner walls and shelves by way of the back panel into the wood pieces on the other side. Secure them with diagonal metal braces. Align the face panel with the side panels and the hood panels. Nail the face of the hutch into place.

    • 10

Attach the drawers separately. Cut the faces of the drawers to the appropriate size. Create a rectangle by attaching the back and side panels to the base of the drawer.

    • 11

Assemble the drawers. Attach the side panels into the base of the drawer. Then slide the back of the drawer on to make sure all the pieces are evenly aligned. Add the face and drawer handles. Attach the accessory parts such as doors and handles.

    • 12

Smooth the wood with the sandpaper or the electric sander, including any rough patches and edges. In the book, "The Complete Guide to Easy Woodworking," the Creative Publishing company advises to "set all nail heads and fill voids with putty." Apply lacquer. Apply varnish and a coat of paint, if you planned to paint.

    • 13

Let the first coat of paint dry overnight. Sandpaper to make it smooth. Then, add the last coat of paint. Let the paint dry overnight. Buy ring cushions and earring cushions. Attach hutch to the dresser that it will rest on.
