Size of a Platform Bed: Dimensions

Sizes

• A platform bed frame will be higher than a traditional metal frame and often includes a headboard, and in some cases a footboard as well. The sizes of the frame itself can vary slightly from the actual mattress size. Measure for the frame, not the mattress. The platform will be slightly wider and longer than the actual mattress. A traditional metal frame, when used alone, can be measured to the same size as the mattress. This is not the case with a platform base.

Bed Sizes

• A twin-size bed is the smallest of the mattress sizes available in platform beds. A twin-size mattress measures 75 inches long and 39 inches wide. Platform frames are also available for full-size mattresses, which measure the same length as a twin-size mattress but are slightly wider, at 54 inches. The length of a queen-size bed increases to 80 inches, and it is 60 inches wide. The largest available mattress is a king-size, which is the same length as a queen but wider, at 76 inches.

Slats or Box Spring

• The size of a platform bed will differ significantly in height based on whether you use a slat bed base or a box spring. Some platform beds already include a plywood base, and if this is the case, then neither one is necessary. However, if the frame is open, you have a choice between wood slats or a box spring. Slats will not raise the height of the mattress past the actual frame height. For those who want a higher-resting mattress, a box spring is a better fit. Box springs also come in two different heights: a standard box spring, which is 8 to 9 inches high, or a low-profile box spring, which is 4.5 to 5.5 inches in height.

Trundles

• Some platform beds are available with a trundle, which serves as an extra bed that is stored underneath the platform frame. These beds are often built as part of the frame and are disguised as storage drawers. In reality, the bed slides out from underneath the frame and can be used as an additional bed for guests. The trundle can fit underneath because platform beds tend to rest higher than a traditional metal bed frame.
