How to Add Sliders to Old Drawers That Don't Have Any

Over time, many dresser drawers become difficult to pull out and push back in. This often occurs when the bottom of the drawer becomes depressed or detached from wear. Drawer slides prevent this problem by allowing the drawer to glide in and out of the dresser compartment on a track. This eases the wear and tear on the drawers. Many older dressers don't have drawer slides, but they can be installed.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all drawers from the dresser.

    • 2

Take out a pair of left and right drawer slides for the first drawer. The left and right are usually marked as such on each slide. Each pair is composed of two separate slides -- one bracket is "L-shaped" and will be secured to the dresser, the other is an inverted L-bracket and will be secured to the bottom-corner of the drawer.

    • 3

Place the drawer slide flat against the corresponding left or right side of the drawer compartment space.

    • 4

Set a level on top of the slide to make sure it is level. If not, raise or lower the slide screws until it is completely level.

    • 5

Insert the tip of an electric drill or Philips screwdriver into the holes in the slide, and pre-drill screw holes.

    • 6

Insert the included screws into the pre-drill holes. Then screw the slide into the inside of the dresser.

    • 7

Set a level on top of the slide to make sure it is level. If not, raise or lower the screws until the slide is completely level.

    • 8

Repeat the process to screw the second slide onto the other side of the drawer's compartment.

    • 9

Line the corresponding left or right drawer slides onto the corresponding left or right bottom-corner of the drawer.

    • 10

Pre-drill holes in the slides with an electric drill or Phillips screwdriver. Then drill in the provided screws into the pre-drilled holes until the slide is secure.

    • 11

Repeat the process to secure the other slide to the other corner of the drawer.

    • 12

Slide the drawer into the drawer slides to make sure the drawer rolls in and out smoothly.

    • 13

Repeat the process to install slides in additional drawer compartments and drawers.
