How to Cedar-Line an Armoire

Cedar wood emits a fragrance that works as a natural repellent for many pests, including moths and their larvae. For this reason, cedar is a common component of closets and storage chests. If you have a piece of furniture, such as an armoire, that does not contain cedar, you can add it. Installing cedar lining inside the armoire creates safe, pest-free storage and does not detract from the appearance of the armoire.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the doors of the armoire as far as possible and prop them open with chairs if they attempt to swing shut. Remove all items from the inside of the armoire and set them out of the way.

    • 2

Place a tape measure at the left side corner of the rear wall and stretch it across to the right corner. Note the measurement.

    • 3

Measure the same distance on an Eastern red cedar wood plank. Secure the plank to a work surface by using a table clamp and cut through the line with a hand saw.

    • 4

Turn the plank, finished side down, and apply construction adhesive in a zig-zag pattern over the entire back. Insert the plank into the rear armoire wall near the bottom with the tongue side facing up. Press it firmly against the wall.

    • 5

Cut another cedar plank to the same length as the first one and apply more adhesive to the back. Push the bottom of the plank, called a groove, over the tongue on the first piece and raise the upper portion of the plank toward the wall to secure it.

    • 6

Install additional cedar planks all the way up the back wall of the armoire in the same manner.

    • 7

Measure the left inside wall of the armoire using the tape measure. Stretch the tape from the front edge to the back corner where the rear cedar planks are located. Cut another plank to this length with the hand saw.

    • 8

Install cedar planks on the left wall just as you did the rear wall making sure that the planks on the side wall line up with those on the back wall to create straight corner seams. Repeat the process on the right wall as well until you have covered the entire inside of the armoire.

Lay three pieces of cedar cove molding on a flat surface. Mark out three sections that are the length of the left wall, the rear wall and the right wall. Cut each line off straight with a hand saw. Then cut a 45 degree angle at the end of each molding piece by placing it into a miter box and inserting the saw blade through the 45 degree mark.

Apply construction adhesive to the back of the molding and press it into place at the top of each wall. Secure it in place with painter's tape until the adhesive dries.
