Chairs That Can Be Made Into a Bed

Versatile furniture adds to the functionality of small spaces. A studio apartment may have a couch during the day that folds out into a bed at night. Sometimes, however, a couch is too big and a narrow chair that becomes a twin bed is in order. There are a variety of types and styles of chairs that become beds.
  1. Chair Sleeper

    • Just as some couches fold out to become beds, some chairs are made the same way. They are called chair sleepers instead of sofa sleepers. Often these chair sleepers look like any other soft, comfortable chair, but have the hidden benefit of pulling out to become a bed. Chair sleepers fold out to twin size beds that are suitable for only one person.

    Futon Frames

    • Some prefer the firmness of a futon but have limited space, and a fold-out futon couch is too big. There are chair width, fold-out futon frames with comfortable cushions to sit or sleep on. Some futon frames come with a separate ottoman made of a wooden stool and a futon cushion on top. This is placed at the bottom of the bed when the chair is pulled out flat. A twin-size fitted sheet is then stretched over the futon chair mattress and ottoman cushion.

    Fold Up Futon Chair

    • Some futon chairs are made especially firm and thick. While folded, they require no frame yet will hold a person's weight comfortably. They easily unfold to form a mattress on the floor. These chairs are usually lightweight and easy to move from room to room. They make excellent additions to children's room and dormitories. They are handy when children have sleepovers with friends.

    Design and Style

    • All of the available chairs that become beds come in a wide variety of fabrics, textures and styles to suit different tastes and decors. This type of furniture is like a hidden treasure in the home because of the dual purposes it serves. From fancy to modern to casual, sleeper chairs and futons are space savers and handy when an extra bed is needed.
