Decorative Ideas for Dresser Tops

Candles

• Candles are often used to decorate dresser tops. Candlesticks, candle plates or baskets may be used with the candles. Use groups of three tall candlesticks of varying heights and place on either the left or right side of the dresser top. For further decoration, place the candlesticks in a wicker tray along with a small artificial plant. Alternatively, place candles on a ceramic candle plate. Use a long, thin candle plate and evenly space three candles on the plate. Place in the center of the dresser top. You could also use a round glass plate. Place three candles on the plate and surround the candles with colored marbles, rocks or shells.

Greenery

• Whether real or artificial, plants and flowers add an elegant look to the dresser top. Depending on the style of the room, you could use artificial branches in a tall ceramic vase, a potted plant or fresh flowers in a tall glass vase. If using a tall vase, place either on the left or right side of the dresser. A smaller potted plant or vase of flowers may be placed in the center.

Pictures

• To personalize the dresser top, place a favorite family photo in an elegant picture frame. While many people overcrowd the dresser top with photos, keep the number to a minimum. If the dresser doesn’t have an attached mirror, rest a large mirror or painting on the dresser top. This is done in lieu of hanging a mirror or painting above the dresser and provides an interesting look.

Other Accessories

• Other accessories that are often used to decorate a dresser top include jewelry boxes and books. Stack two of your favorite hard back books on their sides and place on one end of the dresser top. Place a small figurine, vase or bowl on top of the books. You could also use one large lamp, placed on either side of the dresser, or two smaller lamps. Play up the theme and decor of the bedroom. For example, if it is a beach cottage, add a large decorative shell.
