DIY Indian Bed Hoop Canopy

An Indian-style bed hoop canopy will evoke a sense of mystery in any bedroom. For a truly Indian vibe, colored netting in deep maroon, purple or even saffron yellow are ideal and can be coupled with contrasting or embellished trim. A simple way to make your own hoop canopy is to use a store-bought embroidery hoop. This way you need only sew the canopy and you’re done.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut net fabric so you have enough for a continuous piece of netting 200 inches wide and as long as you need to go from the desired hanging height of the canopy to the floor, or just above the floor. If you need to join several pieces to achieve the size, leave a 1 inch seam allowance on each edge.

    • 2

French seam the pieces of the netting together if you have multiple pieces to form the one continuous piece of netting. Fold the edges of the netting into a double 1/2-inch seam and sew down.

    • 3

Cut 20 strips of cotton fabric to 3 by 9 inches. Fold them in two lengthwise, wrong-side out and sew together to form a tube, leaving one end open. Turn the tubes in the right way and press them flat with an iron. These are the tabs for attaching the netting to the embroidery hoop.

    • 4

Cut strips of cotton fabric 4 inches wide, as many as needed to make a 200-inch strip, allowing an inch on the end of each piece for seam allowance. Sew the strips together to make one long strip.

    • 5

Fold the edges of the long strip of fabric over into a double 1/4-inch seam and press flat. Pin one end of each tab onto one side of the 200-inch edge of the netting. They should be 10 inches apart, with 3 inches of the tab on top of the edge of the netting.

    • 6

Pin the 200-inch strip of cotton fabric over the top of the tab portion that is sitting on top of the netting so it goes all along the edge of the netting and encases the tab ends.

    • 7

Sew the strip of fabric and the tabs in place, double stitching along both edges of the cotton fabric strip so the tabs are stitched onto the netting along with the cotton strip.

    • 8

Attach a press stud half to each end of the tabs with the other half centered on the fabric strip so you can bend each tab over and press the studs together to form a hanging loop.

    • 9

Fold all the tabs over a 15-inch embroidery hoop and press the press studs of the tabs together so the net canopy is attached to the hoop. The canopy will be quite bunched at the top but will drape nicely around a single-sized bed.

    • 10

Attach three lengths of chain to S-hooks that are hooked over the embroidery hoop at equal distances for hanging the canopy
