Instructions

    • 1

Move the chest of drawers outside if possible to reduce potentially harmful fumes or open all windows in your work space. Set the chest of drawers on newspaper or a drop cloth. Remove the drawers from the chest and set them on newspapers.

    • 2

Apply a commercial wood stripper on the chest and drawers. Let the stripper sit for at least 20 minutes. Use a plastic scraper -- do not use metal -- to remove the finish. You may need to reapply the stripper a few times if the piece has several existing coats of paint or varnish.

    • 3

Remove the finish from corners and carving. If you cannot reach into carved pieces on the wood with your plastic scraper, use steel wool. Rub the steel wool along corners and into carvings to get the remainder of the finish off the piece.

    • 4

Sand the entire chest of drawers. Use a fine-grade sandpaper to remove any rough spots or remaining paint or stain. Work over the entire piece until it is smooth to the touch. Wipe it clean with a tack cloth.

    • 5

Paint or stain the wood. Use a paintbrush to apply your desired color. Apply one coat and let it dry for 6 to 8 hours. Apply a second coat if necessary and allow it to dry.

    • 6

Apply a clear sealer or varnish to protect the new finish.

    • 7

Attach new hardware. Choose pulls that echo your decor choices. For example, for a contemporary look, use nickel hardware. For an antique look, use highly polished brass or wrought-iron pulls.
