How to Make a Long Drawer

An excellent way to make use of the storage space under most beds, as well as save wear and tear on your knees, is by creating a long storage drawer that slides back and forth. A long drawer makes organizing clothing and other small objects possible in a space in which they would simply have piled up next to each other otherwise. Affixing wheels to the bottom of the drawer allows for convenient and smooth access to the items in storage with just a tug of the wrist or foot. Handles can be chosen to match other handles in the room, and the wood of the drawer can be painted or stained to match the other furniture.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the large bottom drawer on top of the two five footboards, with the five foot boards parallel to each other on the long sides of the larger board. Pre-drill six evenly spaced holes along the edge of the larger board into the sideboards while an assistant holds the boards in place. Drill the wood screws into the previously made holes to attach the boards together.

    • 2

Place the end boards against the ends of the drawer, and pre-drill holes all along the border of the drawer. Secure the boards together using the wood screws.

    • 3

Set one wheel in each corner of the large bottom board. Pre-drill through the wheel holes. Secure the wheels into place with ½-inch wood screws. Repeat the process to install one wheel in the center of the drawer.

Position the handles on the outside of the drawer in their desired locations. Pre-drill holes for their mounting screws through the designated holes. Attach the handles with wood screws.
