How to Arrange Furniture in a Small, Shared Bedroom

When arranging furniture in a small, shared bedroom, you need to balance practicality with the style you would like to create. Ideally, you want to create a bedroom that is cozy rather than cramped. First, find a suitable location for the beds. Then, use the rest of your furniture pieces and decorations to fill out the bedroom.

Avoid placing any beds in the center of the room, since this can consume a large amount of space. Instead, consider using a bunk bed with twin-size mattresses and placing it in the far corner of the room. If possible, position the bunk bed against a wall that does not have any windows.

    • 2

Move your dresser or chest of drawers to the closet, if space allows. Alternatively, position the dresser on the wall opposite the bunk bed to make the room appear more organized.

    • 3

Remove any unnecessary furniture. For instance, if you have a side table or chair that never gets used, removing it will allow you to conserve space and improve the look of your shared bedroom.

    • 4

Use light-colored furniture, carpet, bedding and walls to make the room appear larger than it actually is. Keep in mind that if you decide to use darker colors, this will likely make your room appear even smaller.

    • 5

Remove any clutter in the room and try to find a home for every item. Purchase storage bins, if necessary, and place them under your bunk bed or in the closet.
