How to Equalize the Baffles of a Down Comforter

A down comforter provides hypoallergenic warmth and comfort in your bed. However, in order for the down to expand to its fullest, the comforter needs a baffle box design. Baffles are walls of fabric sewn into the fabric perpendicular to the top and bottom of the comforter. Baffles keep the down from shifting around the whole comforter, and they give the comforter depth as well. Equalizing the baffles after the comforter has been cleaned will make the down extra fluffy.

Clean your down comforter every three to five years. Check the label to see if your down comforter is washable or dry clean only. Take the comforter to the dry cleaner if it needs dry cleaning. If your comforter can be washed in a washing machine, place it in a large, front-loading machine with with 1 cup of gentle, non-bleach, detergent. Wash the comforter on the gentle cycle.

Place the comforter in a commercial dryer and start it on medium heat. Remove the comforter at the end of every cycle and fluff the down inside the comforter with your hands to make sure it dries equally inside the baffles. It may take two to three hours to completely dry the comforter.

Locate the baffles inside the comforter. Between three and six baffles will be on each side of the comforter, depending on its size, and they will start at the top of the comforter and go all the way to the bottom. The side baffles will go from one side of the comforter to the other side.

Hold the top of the comforter and pull it so it’s straight. This will make the baffles stand up inside the comforter like they should. Lift the comforter and shake it gently to make sure every baffle is equal and to fluff the down inside each baffle.
