Directions for a Murphy Bed With a Sliding Bookcase

Murphy beds, also known as wall beds and pull-downs, are often used in areas where a bed is needed but space is limited. The beds were first used in studio apartments. There are many styles of Murphy beds available today, from simple exposed fold-a-way beds to beds hidden behind ornate desks, shelving units and other storage solutions. Murphy beds can be purchased as full units, kits or plans. Most companies offer at least one library-style Murphy bed in their catalogs.

Instructions

  1. Opening the Bed

    • 1

Slide the bookcases away from one another along the tracks until the bed is fully exposed.

    • 2

Pull down the legs of the bed, and grip the pull tab or handle near the foot of bed.

    • 3

Pull it out from the wall and rest it on the legs.

    • 4

      Add pillows.

    Closing the Bed

    • 5

Remove the pillows and make the bed.

    • 6

Lift the foot of the bed and push toward the enclosure.

    • 7

Lift up until you hear the bed snap into the enclosure at a fully vertical position.

      Fold the legs if necessary.

    • 9

Pull the two bookshelf units toward one another on the track, until they are touching.
