How to Fix Sleepers From Sagging

There are many couches that fold down into sleepers. They are commonly known as sleeper sofas and you may even have a sleeper sofa without knowing it. One of the most common types of sleepers is a futon. Over time, these sleepers may begin to sag. This can make sleeping on them virtually unbearable. If you want to strengthen your sagging sleeper sofa, you can do so and give your guests a more comfortable night's rest.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Pull out the sofa so it is a sleeper and lie down on the bed to see exactly where the sagging is taking place. Lie down on the floor and check under the sofa. Look for the wooden boards that are helping to hold the bed up.

    • 2

Spread out the boards by hand so they are equally spaced out under the sleeper. These bed slats help support the weight of the sleeper. Measure the boards with a tape measure and determine how many extra slats you can fit in.

    • 3

Cut 1-by-4 lumber to the length that you measured with a circular saw. Mark the desired cut location with a pencil and line up the blade of a circular saw with the mark. Turn on the saw and run the blade straight through the 1-by-4. Repeat the process for any other boards that need to be cut.

    • 4

Sand down the edges of the boards you just cut with medium-grade sandpaper. Run the sandpaper over the edges in a circular motion. This will smooth out the surface so it is even throughout. Climb back underneath the bed and set the first slat in to make sure it fits properly.

    • 5

Set in all of the remaining slats running horizontally across the sleeper just like those that are already installed. Continue until slats are filling up the entire underside of the sleeper sofa.
