How to Sew Tufting Buttons on a Headboard

Button-tufted headboards are padded headboards with buttons sewn into them in order to create texture and interest. While the headboard looks ultra elegant in a bedroom setting it’s deceptively simple to create the rich-looking tufting. The key is to measure out a pattern for tufting and drill it into the headboard wood before you add the padding and fabric. This way, the buttons can be sewn in to make the dimpled detail in the headboard.

Instructions

    • 1

Thread the upholstery needle with a piece of thread about 30 inches long. Pull the thread so it is doubled

    • 2

Push the needle through the underside of the headboard and up through a hole in the headboard. Pull the needle through the hole. Leave several inches of thread hanging out of the back of the headboard.

    • 3

Thread the needle through the hole in the button two to three times.

    • 4

Push the needle back into the headboard and guide it through the hole. Pull the needle out of the back of the headboard. Pull the thread tight to create the tuft.

Snip the thread from the needle and tie the two loose ends of thread into a knot to keep the button from coming loose.
