How to Remove a Thermopane Section From a Living Room Window

Many newer living room windows are made with thermal glass instead of single pane glass. Thermal glass is made with two glass surfaces that are sandwiched around a central area that is either a vacuum or filled with inert gas. If the seal is broken, it loses its insulating abilities and may become foggy and unattractive. Remove and replace a single pane without taking out the entire window.

Instructions

    • 1

Brace a small crowbar against the side of the window frame and pry off the trim laterally across the face of the glass. Don't brace the crowbar against the glass.

    • 2

Separate the caulking or putty that surrounds the window pane by running a sharp utility knife around the perimeter of the window, between its edge and the inside face of the window frame.

    • 3

Push the glass outward from inside the house. Have a helper outside to control it so it doesn't fall on the ground and break.
